Dachshund Sports

EARTHDOG

In Canada and the United States, in addition to the all-breed events they can participate in (obedience, tracking, agility, etc.), dachshunds can test their instinct to go-to-ground after a quarry in "Earthdog Tests". These tests were developed only for dachshunds and smaller terriers. The following document describes Canadian Earthdog Tests put on by the CKC : CKC Earthdog Tests (.pdf)

Griffin earned his SENIOR Earthdog title at 2 1/2 years of age

FIELD TRIALS

In the United States, dachshunds can participate in "Dachshund Field Trials" to obtain the title of Field Champion. Dachshund Field Trials are performance events designed to test the "above ground" hunting ability of the dachshund. These trials help demonstrate the desirable qualities of the dachshund's aptitude to pursue game in an energetic and decisive manner. The AKC rules also mention following the game to ground when necessary and to deal with it with courage and determination. To learn more about Dachshund field trials go to the Dallas-Forth Worth Dachshund Club website and click on "Field Trials".

HUNTING

North American Teckel Club Hunting Tests The NATC's intent is to use the European dachshund "usefulness" tests as a basis for developing similar tests adapted to North American game and hunting methods and traditions. The tests will be designed to assess the capability of dachshunds to usefully perform various hunting functions including:

  • tracking wounded big game so that the hunter may retrieve it;
  • locating and trailing small game while giving voice so that the hunter knows where the game and the dog are passing
  • locating, baying and/or bolting underground quarry; and
  • flushing rabbits from thickets, brushpiles and dens.

Raccoon and Badger Hunting (Europe)
From Frank Joisten of Germany, some terrific pictures of his dachshunds working everything from badger and raccoon-dog (Tankuki) to American raccoon and fox.

Blood Tracking - Tracking Wounded Big Games with Dachshunds
Blood tracking is a method of using tracking dogs, usually on a long tracking leash, to find wounded big game such as deer and bear. A tracking dog is usually used when there is little or no blood that the hunter can see. The dog tracks by following the blood scent and other body and footprint scents of the individual animal being tracked. This is John & Jolanta Jeannesey's (Von Moosbach-Zuzelek Dachshunds - New York) Born-to-Track.Com website.

Dachshunds - Versatile Hunting Dogs
Few people in North America realize that the dachshund is the consummate small hunting dog of Europe. The Dachshund is a truely versatile hunting breed, trained and used for many different types of hunt. The North American Teckel Club informs us on :

  1. Woodchuck Hunting
  2. Rabbit Hunting
  3. Hunting Fox and Other Game
  4. Tracking Wounded Game
  5. Dachshunds and Falconry
